Skin Education

Know Your Skin.
Love Your Skin.

Everything you need to understand your skin, from types and concerns to building the perfect routine for Nigerian skin.

Step One

Know Your Skin Type

Your skin type is the foundation of every product choice. It can change with seasons, hormones and age. Reassess it regularly.

🌿

Normal Skin

Balanced moisture, small pores, rarely breaks out. The gold standard. Focus on maintenance and protection.

  • Use a gentle cleanser twice daily
  • Apply SPF 30+ every morning
  • Light moisturiser morning and night
💧

Oily Skin

Excess sebum production, enlarged pores, prone to blackheads and acne. Common in humid Nigerian weather.

  • Gel or foam cleanser twice daily
  • Non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturiser
  • Niacinamide serum to control oil
  • Never skip moisturiser. Dry skin overproduces oil
🌸

Dry Skin

Feels tight, looks dull, may flake. Needs rich hydration especially in harmattan season.

  • Cream cleanser that does not strip skin
  • Hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin
  • Rich moisturiser with ceramides
  • Avoid long hot showers
⚖️

Combination Skin

Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with dry or normal cheeks. Very common across West Africa.

  • Gentle cleanser that balances both zones
  • Lighter moisturiser on T-zone
  • Richer cream on dry areas
  • Treat zones separately when needed
🌺

Sensitive Skin

Reacts to new products, weather changes, or stress. May sting, itch or redden easily.

  • Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products
  • Patch-test everything new
  • Minimal ingredient lists
  • Soothing ingredients: aloe, centella, oat
Common Issues

Skin Concerns and Solutions

Melanin-rich skin comes with unique strengths and vulnerabilities. Here is how to address the most common ones.

Hyperpigmentation

Dark spots and uneven skin tone are among the most common concerns for melanin-rich skin. Caused by sun damage, acne scarring, or hormonal changes.

Look for

Vitamin CNiacinamideAlpha ArbutinKojic AcidTranexamic Acid

Bleaching creams with mercury or hydroquinone above 2%

Acne and Breakouts

Triggered by excess oil, bacteria, hormones, or clogged pores. Nigeria's heat and humidity can worsen breakouts.

Look for

Salicylic AcidBenzoyl PeroxideNiacinamideTea Tree OilZinc

Heavy oils and comedogenic products on oily skin

Dryness and Dehydration

Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water. Both are treatable. Harmattan season particularly affects Nigerian skin.

Look for

Hyaluronic AcidCeramidesGlycerinShea ButterSqualane

Alcohol-based toners and harsh cleansers

Sun Damage

The Nigerian sun is intense year-round. UV rays cause pigmentation, early ageing, and increase skin cancer risk even in darker skin tones.

Look for

Broad-spectrum SPF 30+Vitamin CNiacinamide

Skipping sunscreen. No skin tone is immune to UV damage

Uneven Texture

Rough patches, enlarged pores, bumpy skin from dead cell buildup. Exfoliation is key but must be done gently.

Look for

AHAs (Glycolic, Lactic Acid)BHA (Salicylic Acid)RetinolVitamin C

Over-exfoliating. 2 to 3 times a week is the maximum

Keloids and Scarring

Darker skin tones are more prone to keloid formation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after injury or acne.

Look for

SiliconeOnion ExtractVitamin ECentella Asiatica

Picking or squeezing acne. Always let it heal naturally

Step By Step

Building Your Routine

A good skincare routine does not need to be complicated. Follow this order for the best results. Products apply thinnest to thickest.

1

Cleanse

AM and PM

Removes dirt, oil, makeup and pollution. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser appropriate for your skin type. Double cleanse in the evening if you wear SPF or makeup.

2

Tone

AM and PM (optional)

Restores skin pH and preps for the next step. Avoid alcohol-based toners. Look for hydrating toners with hyaluronic acid or centella.

3

Treat (Serum)

AM and PM

The most targeted step. Address your main concern: Vitamin C for brightness, Niacinamide for oil and pores, Retinol (PM only) for ageing and texture.

4

Moisturise

AM and PM

Seals in hydration and supports the skin barrier. Every skin type needs moisture. Oily skin needs lightweight, dry skin needs richer formulas.

5

SPF

AM only

The single most important step for preventing pigmentation and ageing. Use SPF 30+ every morning, rain or shine. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

Pro Tip: Less is More

Start with 3 steps: cleanser, moisturiser, SPF. Add one new product at a time, every 4 weeks. This makes it easier to spot what works and what causes reactions.
